Abstract
The new information from the Population Count conducted in 2007 led IBGE to revise its estimates for the population of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro — now estimated at 6,093,472 residents as of April 2007 — which represents a decrease compared to the previous estimate by IBGE, which predicted 6,136,652 residents one year earlier. This text (i) briefly presents the methods used by IBGE for estimating the population of federative units and municipalities, (ii) compares the current estimates made by IBGE with previous estimates from 2006 and 2004, and (iii) presents considerations about the need to incorporate territorial variables for making population estimates.
