Abstract

In early 2007, the decrease in preschool enrollments in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro led the Municipal Education Secretariat (SME) to seek the cooperation of the Pereira Passos Municipal Institute of Urbanism (IPP), an agency responsible for producing information to support municipal management. As will be discussed in this brief Technical Note, the organization and analysis of the most recent available data on the child population allowed for the conclusion that, contrary to the pessimistic perspectives of a loss of efficiency in school inclusion, what was actually observed, based on the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) from IBGE, was a decrease in absolute terms of the child population residing in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the age group between 0 and 5 years.
