Abstract
The proportion of men to women is technically called the sex ratio. The 2000 Demographic Census reveals that this indicator continues to decrease, having been 98.8 in 1940 and dropping to 88.3 in the year 2000. This last result shows that there are practically twelve fewer men for every one hundred women in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
