Abstract
For those studying the city, the Demographic Census is a source of information that arrives in dribs and drabs, like TV soap operas. Not that the IBGE enjoys suspense; indeed, the preparation, tabulation, and critique processes of a Census require years of work. For this reason, every time a result is released, even if preliminary, researchers seek to interpret trends and meanings. And the city tries to learn a little more about itself.
