Abstract

The history of Rio de Janeiro in the 20th century cannot be written without considering the growth of the favelas. The urban modernization implemented at the beginning of the century removed the tenements from the city center without providing a housing policy for the poor population. The limitations imposed by distance and high transportation costs led the population to occupy the empty spaces on the hills located on the outskirts of the urban area, giving rise to the phenomenon known as favela.
