Ethics and misconduct
Plagiarism and data falsification are prohibited; all texts are screened using Plagium. Authorship follows the criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and must clearly state who was responsible for conceptualization, methodology, software, validation, formal analysis, investigation, resources, data curation, writing—original draft preparation, writing—review and editing, visualisation, supervision, project administration, and funding acquisition. Ghost or gift authorship is not permitted. Any conflicts of interest must be declared by authors, submitting an article for evaluation. Reviewers and editors must also declare any conflicts of interest when dealing with articles distributed to them.
Corrections
Articles may be corrected after publication when an error or omission is identified that affects the accuracy, completeness, indexing, or interpretation of the published work, but does not invalidate its main findings or conclusions. Corrections may result from errors attributable to the authors or from errors introduced during the editorial or production process.
A correction will be issued as a formal editorial notice, clearly linked to the original article and freely accessible. The notice will identify the error and describe the correction. The original article will normally remain available as part of the permanent scholarly record, with the correction clearly indicated and linked to the article. Minor typographical, spelling, or grammatical errors that do not affect the meaning, accuracy, indexing, or interpretation of the article will not normally warrant a formal correction.
The decision to issue a correction will be made by the Editor-in-Chief, who may consult the authors, peer reviewers, members of the Editorial Board, or the authors' institutions when necessary. Corrections will not normally be used to alter the scholarly record when the reliability of the article's findings or conclusions has been substantially compromised; in such cases, retraction may be considered.
Retractions
Articles may be retracted when there is clear evidence that their findings or conclusions are unreliable, whether as a result of misconduct or honest error. Grounds for retraction may include, but are not limited to, data fabrication or falsification, plagiarism, serious methodological or analytical errors, unethical research, substantial undisclosed conflicts of interest, duplicate publication, or other circumstances that materially compromise the integrity or reliability of the published work.
Retractions are issued to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record. A retraction notice will be published as a separate, freely accessible editorial notice, clearly linked to the retracted article, and will state the reasons for retraction. The notice will be clearly distinguishable from other types of post-publication notices. The original article will not normally be removed from the journal's archive; instead, it will remain available with a clear “Retracted” watermark or header, together with a prominent link to the retraction notice.
The decision to retract an article will be made by the Editor-in-Chief, and may involve consultation with the authors, peer reviewers, relevant members of the Editorial Board, or the authors' institutions. Where appropriate, the journal may notify the authors' institutions or other relevant bodies of serious ethical or research-integrity concerns. Depending on the circumstances, violations of the journal's policies may result in rejection, correction, retraction, or notification to the authors' institutions.
Allegations of misconduct and general complaints
In cases where an allegation of misconduct arises, a formal report should be submitted to the journal via the contact e-mail (contato@estudoscariocas.rio), or the editors' e-mails (lcteixeiracoelho@prefeitura.rio and leandro.souza@prefeitura.rio).
