Transparency and Ethics Statement

Coleção Estudos Cariocas - Carioca Studies Collection is committed to the highest standards of ethics and transparency in scholarly publishing, in accordance with editorial best practices. This statement outlines the following key points:

Identity and governance

The journal's title is unique and does not cause confusion with other publications. Its publication frequency is clearly stated on the website.
The journal is managed by the Pereira Passos Municipal Institute of Urban Planning (in Portuguese, Instituto Municipal de Urbanismo Pereira Passos), with institutional affiliation and contact details clearly displayed in the page footer. The Editorial Team consists of recognized experts in the field. Their full names, affiliations, and roles are available on the website, and editors can be contacted via a public physical address and email.

Website and editorial standards

The aims and scope are defined on the website, along with authorship criteria. The electronic ISSN is prominently displayed in the journal description. The website avoids misleading information and does not imitate other journals.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Regarding the use of artificial intelligence tools, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), the journal authorizes their use exclusively for text revision and translation purposes. If such tools are employed in the preparation of the article, this circumstance must be disclosed to the editorial team at the time of submission, in the form of a comment.

Peer review

The journal employs a double-blind peer review system by independent experts. Review criteria and timelines are detailed on the website. We do not guarantee acceptance or excessively short review times. Reviewers and editors must treat manuscripts as confidential documents.

Copyright and licensing

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, based on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports greater global knowledge exchange.
Therefore, this is an open-access journal, meaning all content is freely available without cost to users or their institutions. Users may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without requesting prior permission from the publisher or author, provided they cite the source.
In terms of licensing, this journal operates under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY) license. This allows others to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the work, even commercially, as long as they credit the authors for the original creation. All authors who publish in this journal retain all rights to their works and must accept these terms as conditions of publication. The journal also adheres to digital preservation via Public Knowledge Project and Cariniana (LOCKSS) and is linked to several indexers, listed on its main page.

Fees and funding

The journal charges no fees (Article Processing Charges). This information is clearly stated on the website. There is no editorial bias regarding the free publication of articles. Any advertisements are separate from editorial content and do not influence decisions.
Additionally, if an article has received external funding, this must be disclosed in the text.

Ethics and misconduct

Plagiarism and data falsification are prohibited; all texts are screened using Plagium. Authorship follows the criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and must clearly state who was responsible for conceptualization, methodology, software, validation, formal analysis, investigation, resources, data curation, writing—original draft preparation, writing—review and editing, visualisation, supervision, project administration, and funding acquisition. All authors must also declare they have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript.
Ghost or gift authorship is not permitted. Any conflicts of interest must be declared by authors, submitting an article for evaluation. Reviewers and editors must also declare any conflicts of interest when dealing with articles distributed to them.
Articles may be retracted if there is clear evidence that findings are unreliable, either due to misconduct such as data fabrication or plagiarism, or due to honest error such as miscalculation or experimental error. Retraction may also occur if the work constitutes plagiarism, reports unethical research, or was published elsewhere.
Retractions are issued to maintain the integrity of the academic record. Retraction notices will be clearly linked to the retracted article, state the reasons for retraction, be freely accessible and clearly distinguishable from other types of corrections, and will not remove the original article, which will remain available with a clear “Retracted” watermark or header.
The decision to retract will be made by the Editorial Board, and when necessary, with the authors and/or their institutions. Violations may result in rejection, retraction, or notification to the authors' institutions.

Allegations of misconduct and general complaints

In cases where an allegation of misconduct arises, a formal report should be submitted to the journal via the contact e-mail (contato@estudoscariocas.rio), or the editors' e-mails (lcteixeiracoelho@prefeitura.rio and leandro.souza@prefeitura.rio). The Editorial Board will address the matter impartially and confidentially and provide a timely answer within a maximum period of two months. The same procedure applies to general complaints regarding the journal’s policies, procedures, or specific content.

Research involving humans or animals

Ethics committee approval is required for studies involving human or animal participants.
